Here’s Phil

November 4th, 2010

Born to a grocer and a housewife in small-town southeast Saskatchewan, Phil Smith began his comedy career at a very early age. Secretly hiding in his prison-style bedroom in back the double-wide, Phil would perform Improv for his stuffed animals. “Basically, I have been Improv-ing my whole life” claims Smith, “From the start, I have never concerned myself with the consequences of anything I have said or done, which makes me the perfect Improv performer”.

Post pre-school, Phil continued to wow his elementary peers and teachers with spot-on impressions. “I would do impressions of my classmates and the principal” boasted Phil, “the principal did not like me that much” he chuckled. At the age of eleven, Phil migrated north to Nipawin and his family followed him to start fresh (Crap went down at the grocery store).
Phil said having his family come with him to Nipawin was a big deal for him. “I was only eleven, it would have been hard for me to get a job or find a place. Luckily, it was my impression career on the line; they supported me, and came through to help me live in Nipawin”. It was while Phil was in Nipawin that he wrote his jokes about horses and carnies. “One day I saw a carnie and I was like … this is the future of the comedy art form”.

At the age of 18, an emotionally unstable Smith ran away from home to pursue his secret passion, nursing. “I have always loved nursing” says Phil, “It combines my favourite parts of both improv and impressions”. However, even his love of nursing couldn’t keep him off of Regina’s stand-up stages. To clarify, Regina is where Phil ran away to at 18.

Now that Phil is 25 with a GQ subscription, he has become very popular with Regina audiences who had previously called his comedy “too impression-heavy and nurse-obsessed”. Having done shows for the Canadian Comedy Awards as well as Chillers in Moose Jaw, Phil has really come into his own with this comedian thing. “I got so funny when I turned 25 that none of my nursing school friends could believe it” boasted Phil, “I am going to so famous”.
Yes, Phil, you will be so famous.
